Tórshavn - Many were shocked by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) announcement this morning, revealing that the Faroese men's handball team has received an invitation to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision stems from a “special sports diplomacy project” aimed at providing emerging nations with opportunities on the global stage.

The Faroe Islands' national team has never competed in the Olympics and is not even an IOC member, making this news a huge surprise for the island nation. The president of the Faroese Handball Federation, Gunn Ellefsen, expressed his excitement: "This is a historic moment. We knew we had made great progress in recent years, but we never imagined we would receive a direct invitation to the Olympics."

The decision has caused some controversy among traditionally strong handball nations. The president of the Danish Handball Federation, Jan Kampman, commented: "The Faroese team has indeed developed impressively, but Olympic participation should be earned through qualification, not an invitation."
